It's a little known fact but many Irish fought for the commonwealth army back then simply because they had no choice in the matter. It was either that or starve to death, go to a workhouse or become a land tenant (which was essentially slavery back then). Also, there was a couple of minor famines back in  the 1730s onwards, I say minor because the 1840 one was the Great Famine that wiped out several million which is why it is the one we all know more about.
