Æthelred II (c. 966 – 1016), given the epithet the Unready, was King of the English from 978 until he was dethroned by Sweyn Forkbeard in 1013, and from 1014 upon reclaiming the seat until his death.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
From 980 onward, England was plagued by more invading Vikings. Æthelred and several other leaders of his time attempted to bribe the Vikings by paying them to leave. This strategy would work until 1013, when the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard landed, dethroned Æthelred, and banished him to Norway.[2] Although Æthelred later returned to England and regained his throne,[1] the House of Wessex would not fully rule England again until nearly 30 years later under his son Edward the Confessor.[2]
