The York Watergate was a watergate situated right next to River Thames in London, United Kingdom. It was connected to the York House in the Strand before the house was demolished in 1672.

History[edit | edit source]

The watergate was constructed in 1626 by George Villiers, the 1st Duke of Buckingham following his purchase of the York House from the Archbishop of York two years earlier. In 1672, his son sold the house to developers. Over the years, the watergate was left untouched while the York House and neighbouring mansions were torn down and replaced with roads.[1]

In 1874, the Victoria Embankment Gardens were created around the remaining gate. The gate itself was eventually acquired in 1893 by the London County Council as an object of public interest.[1]
