Wine pouring from a fountain in the Merchant King's Palace

Wine is an alcoholic beverage typically made from fermented grapes. It is one of the oldest types of alcohol in the world,[1] having been popular as far back as ancient Greece, where one of their main deities was the god of wine, Dionysos.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

During the 5th century BCE, the island of Naxos was one of the biggest exporters of wine in the Greek world.[2] Markos of Kephallonia, a friend to the misthios Kassandra, also owned a vineyard and produced wine, though it was nigh undrinkable,[3] something that Kassandra would remember throughout her life.[4]

During the 9th century, wine was a popular choice of drink in England, though not as popular as mead.[5] Because England lacked many vineyards, most wine originated from Francia, one of the largest producers of wine at the time.[6] In 874, during the Yule festival in Jorvik, the city's High Reve Audun, a secret member of the Order of the Ancients, poisoned the festival wine to eliminate the city's nobility and allow him to claim Jorvik for the Order. However, his plan was thwarted by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, who assassinated Audun.[7]

In 1191, the central fountain of the Merchant King's Palace in Damascus was filled with wine, which the guests of Abu'l Nuqoud's lavish parties could freely enjoy. However, during one particular party, the wine was secretly poisoned by Abu'l, as part of his plot to exact revenge on his tormentors. Although many people died from the poisoned wine, the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad killed Abu'l before his guards could eliminate the remaining guests.[8]

During the Renaissance, members of the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins were known to make their own wine.[9] Following his retirement from the Brotherhood, the Mentor Ezio Auditore da Firenze managed his own vineyard in the Tuscan countryside.[10]

By the 18th century, wine had begun to be imported to the Americas from Europe. While visiting the city of Kingston in 1721, the Italian diplomat Ruggiero Ferraro expressed his gratitude for the import of wine, as he could not stand drinking rum more than once a month.[11]

In 1725, during their stay in the Sultanate of Sulu, the Dutch East India Company's chief navigator Jan van Aert and the pirate captain Rupiya were served wine.[12] Wine was also a popular drink in France during the Revolution.[13] The Assassin Arno Dorian was a frequent consumer of the beverage and, during his brief exile from the Brotherhood, began drinking large quantities of wine to drown his sorrows.[14]
