Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633 – 1707) was a Dutch painter.
Considered the founder of the English school of marine painting, he produced paintings such as The Burning of the 'Royal James' at the Battle of Solebay and An English Ship in Action with Barbary Vessels. The latter painting was primarily done with imaginative and technical skills, as opposed to being an actual historic representation. During the early 18th century, the pirate Edward Kenway recovered these paintings through his merchant fleet.[1]
