Valerian (Latin: Publius Licinius Valerianus Augustus; c. 193 CE – 260/264 CE), also known as Valerian the Elder, was Roman Emperor from 22 October 253 CE to spring 260 CE.

By 259 CE, Valerian shared power with his son, Gallienus, and grandson, Saloninus, and the three ruled over the Roman Empire. Senator Caïus Fulvus Vultur had a low opinion of the Emperors and specifically remarked that he considered Valerian to have been a shadow of his former self.[1]
