Touman (頭曼; died 209 BCE) was a chanyu of the Xiongnu in the time of the Qin dynasty and the father of Modu.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

He was driven to the far north by the Qin general Meng Tian in around 220 BCE, but he was able to experience a little resurgence upon Meng Tian's death ten years later. Because he did not favour Modu, he sent him away as a hostage to the Yuezhi and then invaded the Yuezhi in the hopes of having Modu killed. However, Modu escaped, an act of daring that earned Touman's recognition, and he was awarded with the command of 10,000 horsemen. It was with these very horsemen that Modu later usurped his father for leadership of the Xiongu. Having trained his warriors to shoot in sync at any target he signalled with his whistling arrow without hesitation, he had Touman assassinated by a hail of arrows while they were out on a hunting trip.[2]
