The Torre delle Milizie (English: Tower of the Militia) is a fortified tower in Rome, Italy, near Trajan's Market. It is one of the oldest and tallest fortified towers in the city.

History[edit | edit source]

While popular beliefs indicate the Roman Emperor Nero as the commissioner of the tower, the tower was most likely built during the reign of Pope Innocent III in the late 12th to early 13th century.[1]

In 1348, an earthquake in northeastern Italy caused the tower to tilt slightly and the top floor to crumble. By the Renaissance, the tower was annexed to Trajan's Market, and rumors soon emerged of a treasure in the hard-to-reach upper levels, but no proof for a treasure was ever found.[1]
