Thrasybulus (c. 440 BCE – 388 BCE) was an Athenian general who fought during the Peloponnesian War and led the restoration of democracy to Athens after its governance by the Thirty Tyrants.
Biography[edit | edit source]
When the pro-Spartan obligarchy took power in Athens during and after the Peloponnesian War,[1] Thrasybulus was one of those who was exiled and became part of the resistance seeking to free the polis from the Tyrants, who were led by Critias.[2]
In 403 BCE, joined by the misthios Kassandra, Thrasybulus captured the fort at Munychia in Piraeus and defended it against the army led by Critias. During the battle, Critias was killed by Kassandra, resulting in the exiles' victory.[3] The Thirty Tyrants, having lost their leader, lost power and were eventually disposed by a vote of the governing body of Athens. After a negotiation with the Spartans during the Battle of Piraeus, an arrangement was set and Thrasybulus and the exiles were able to return to Athens.[4] At the Pnyx, Thrasybulus held a funeral for the deceased politicians Theramenes and Polemarchus, who were wronged and killed by the Thirty Tyrants.[3]
