A smallsword, also known as a dress sword or court sword,[1] is a one-handed sword of European origin designed for thrusting and dueling which was popular during the 18th century. It is characterized by its tapering blade and its shell-shaped guard.
Description[edit | edit source]

Similar to the earlier rapier, the smallsword is a one-handed European sword with a slender blade which specializes in thrusting strikes. The blade tapers into a fine point though it may not necessarily be as thin as that of the rapier. Typically, a smallsword can further be identified by its hilt. It is standard for a smallsword to have a lobe or a curved, oval disc for a guard and a moderately rounded grip terminating in another lobe for the pommel.[1][2][3]
History[edit | edit source]
The height of popularity for the smallsword was the early 18th century. It was quite commonplace in the European colonies of the West Indies during the Golden Age of Piracy.[1] As the century wore on, it became less prevalent though it still figured into the American Revolution.[3] By the time of the French Revolution, it was largely absent from Paris.[4]
