The Santa Maria Novella District was one of four main districts of Florence.

History[edit | edit source]

This district took its name from the Church of Santa Maria Novella, the first great basilica in Florence. The Basilica di San Lorenzo, built in 393, was located on the north side of the district, while Santa Maria Novella was adjacent to the Mercato Vecchio in the district's center.[1]
