Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester (1595 – 1677) was an English diplomat and politician.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In the 1630s, Sidney purchased land from the government, building Leicester House and walling off what would later be known as Leicester Square. The public didn't take kindly to once-public land being walled off and used exclusively by the rich, so King Charles I responded to the outcry by making the field public once again.[1]
