Richard Prescott (1725 – 19 October 1788) was a British Army officer who held the rank of Lieutenant-General during the American Revolutionary War.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Prescott was captured in 1775 by the Continental Army[1] during the American invasion of Quebec, but was then released in exchange for General John Sullivan.[2] By 1777, Prescott was placed in command of 4,000 troops in the city of Newport, Rhode Island, and based himself in the Loyalist Henry Overing's farm, where he was only protected by a few people.[1]
In July, Prescott became a target of the American general William Barton, who sought to exchange him for General Charles Lee,[3] the Continental Army's second-in-command who was captured following George Washington's retreat from the Battle of Long Island as part of the war's New York and New Jersey campaign.[4] With the help of the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, the Americans were able to uncover Prescott's location and stage an infiltration operation.
