Petroleum, also known as crude oil or just oil, is a naturally occurring, yellowish-black liquid chemical mixture found in geological formations, consisting mainly of hydrocarbons. The term petroleum refers both to naturally occurring unprocessed crude oil, as well as to petroleum products that consist of refined crude oil.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Petroleum is a highly sought-after resource, being used in manufacturing a vast variety of materials essential for modern life.[1] Due to its flammable nature, it was also one of the components of Greek fire, an incendiary weapon first utilized by the Byzantine Empire.[2] In 1725, the Joseon engineer Yun Pyeong-Gyu found several barrels of petroleum inside a warehouse in Manila, which he promptly had loaded onto the Fenghuang,[3] allowing him to produce large quantities of Greek fire for the Zhang Wei Union's usage.[4]
During the 20th century, Abstergo Industries gained control of British Petroleum, a global oil and gas company headquartered in London, England.[5]
