Orléans is the capital prefecture and commune of Loiret in north-central France.

In 1428, the city was besieged by the English as part of the Hundred Years' War. In this pivotal battle, the sudden appearance of the peasant girl, Jeanne d'Arc, as a commander turned the tide in favour of the French when they had been on the verge of a calamitous defeat, establishing her legend as a heroic icon.[1]
