Mount Atago (愛宕山) is a mountain located just northwest of Kyoto, Japan. During the Sengoku period, it was considered part of Tamba Province.

History[edit | edit source]

Starting in the 8th century, its shrine has been a center for Shugendō, a regional mix of Mountain and Buddhist beliefs, with the inner area paying respect to the tengu Tarobo. In 1582, before his betrayal, a tale of Akechi Mitsuhide was told of how he prayed at the shrine and even wrote poetry that detailed his desire for complete power and decision to attack Oda Nobunaga.[1]

Later that year, the Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke climbed the mountain to meet with Mitsuhide's children, Akechi Mitsuyoshi and Hosokawa Tama, after rescuing the former from Kameyama Castle. At the shrine, Yasuke spoke to Tama, who was grateful to be reunited with her younger brother and agreed to leave the Templar Order. She also gave Yasuke the location of the Portuguese Templar Nuno Caro before leaving with Mitsuyoshi.[2]
