The Mamluk Sultanate was a state founded by the Bahri Mamluks that ruled Egypt, the Levant, and western Arabia from its overthrow of the Ayyubid dynasty in 1250 until its conquest by the Ottoman Empire in 1517.[1]

After the Mamluks revolted against their Ayyubid masters in 1250, the Egyptian Assassins supported the rebels by entrusting them with the Scepter of Aset. Using the Piece of Eden, the Mamluks were able to depose the Ayyubid government in Egypt and found the Bahri dynasty, which would rule the country for nearly three centuries. In addition to the Scepter, the Assassin Darim Ibn-La'Ahad later gave an Apple of Eden to the first Sultan of the dynasty, which further helped the Mamluks to establish an era of prosperity in Egypt.[2] |
During the early 16th century, the sultanate was led by Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghawri, who had several dealings around the Mediterranean Sea that attracted the interest of the Assassins. In Alexandria, for example, one of the Sultan's excavations of the destroyed library unearthed two Memory Seals.[3] While the Sultan was in Algiers, the Ottoman prince Korkut sought an audience with him, hoping to secure an alliance and gain influence over his brothers Selim and Ahmet.[4]
The Mamluks allied with the Safavid Empire and allowed them to take the city of Damascus,[5] planning a joint attack on Bursa in return. The Safavid high command was stationed in Damascus as personal guests of the sultan when the Assassins sent some of their members to assassinate their generals and cripple their command structure.[6]
Another clash between the Assassins' and the sultanate's interests occurred in Jerusalem, where the former sought to reestablish a stable guild for the first time in a century.[7] The ruling Mamluks feared the Assassins' growing strength and arrested their Mentor, Mujir. A group of Assassins was sent to "rescue Mujir in spectacular fashion", harming no one but sending the message that they would not be intimidated.[8] The Assassins also negotiated for peace between some Mamluk riders and a party of Ottoman Sepahis.[9]
