John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford (c. 1485 – 1555) was an English royal minister.
In 1540,[1] King Henry VIII seized the garden belonging to Westminster Abbey as part of the dissolution of the monasteries across the United Kingdom,[2] in which the crown forcibly disbanded religious institutions and took their assets.[3] In 1552,[2] the garden land was granted to Russell, though he showed little interest in it and left it unattended.[1]
