Fortunée Jean, Henri Marchand and Joachim François in Port-au-Prince

Joachim François was a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue. Despite the Code Noir, he had somehow managed to be schooled and become literate.

In 1735, he and two other slaves – Henri Marchand and Fortunée Jean – were chosen to join the French Geodesic Mission on the orders of the Assassin Adéwalé so that they could relay the information they learned to both the Assassins and the Maroons.[1]
