The Great Fire of New Orleans was a major conflagration of the center of New Orleans, Louisiana on 21 March 1788.[1] The fire began at the home of Don Vicente Jose Nuñez, the army paymaster and a member of the Louisianian Templars. While tracking the rumored presence of a "Rougarou", a group of Assassins from the Louisiana Brotherhood came upon the scene soon after the fire started, but the flames had already spread to the municipal building, barracks, and armory nearby. The chaos of the conflagration was augmented by civilians fleeing in terror, while Spanish Army soldiers rushed to various locations.[2]

The rougarou burst out of the house and onto the street from a window, out of breath and severely burned, before both it and the Assassins were targeted by the soldiers. As they fled on the rooftops, they saw the fire spreading throughout the city, being aided by strong winds.[2]
