During the French Revolution, Monge entered into a military science competition, whose challenge was to find the means of efficiently increasing the stability of explosive powders. After some time, he was able to deduce a stable formula within one of his books. However, a competitor, Colonel Frolois, knew of Monge's quick expertise. Thus, he intended to sabotage his findings with a explosion at Monge's lab using the solar cannon in the Palais-Royal.
