Frederick III (1463 – 1525), known as Frederick the Wise (German: Friedrich der Weise), was Elector of Saxony from 1486 to his death.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1502, Frederick planned to found an academic institution in the city of Wittenberg. Dedicated to religious reform, it would have teachings that openly questioned the actions of the House of Borgia. In response, the Borgia attempted to prevent the opening of the university by sending Frederick a large monetary bribe.[1][2]

Ezio Auditore da Firenze became aware of the scheme and sent a team of Italian Assassin apprentices from Rome to intercept the money, having them dress in bandit attire to disguise their presence from the Borgia. After obtaining the bribe, they subsequently donated the money as an anonymous gift to Frederick and his newly instituted academy.[1][2]
