The first bridge on [[Pont Saint-Michel|this location]] was built during a lull in the [[Hundred Years' War]], in around 1378. It was named after the small nearby chapel of Saint-Michel (in the enclosure of the Palais du Roi) which also lent its name to the district. It was the first location of a fixed bridge linking the [[Île de la Cité|Cité]] to the left bank. Like all other bridges at the time, it was fragile, and often ravaged by flood waters.
