This article has a lot of room for expansion. Please improve it with additional information in accordance with the Manual of Style

Daimyō (大名) were Japanese feudal lords who ruled most of Japan from their land holdings from the 10th century until the Meiji Restoration's creation of the prefecture system in 1871. Backgrounds of daimyō ranged from families related to the Imperial family to promoted samurai. Though they were subordinated to the emperor and the shōgun,[1] there were periods, such as the late Sengoku period, which saw both of these powers weakened compared to those of the many regional daimyō.[2]

Notable daimyō include Date Masamune,[3] Mōri Motonari,[4] and Oda Nobunaga.[5]
