Cockade

Cockades are knots of ribbons or other circular shaped symbols of distinctive colors, typically worn on hats.

History[edit | edit source]

During the French Revolution, cockades were worn by revolutionaries. The cockades consisted of the colors blue, white and red, which also became the French flag, known as the tricolore.

This idea was presented to Louis XVI during a meeting with the Marquis de Lafayette at the Hôtel de Ville on 17 July 1789. Next to the red and blue colors of Paris, Lafayette had added the white color of the monarchy, symbolizing the King's central role in a new constitutional monarchy. During the Women's March on Versailles, Louis was also forced to pin a cockade to his hat.

Throughout the revolution, the Assassin Arno Dorian collected cockades across Paris and Versailles.
