To this day historians are baffled as to what caused the drought. My bet: dramatic tension.

The Aquedotto Claudio (Latin: Aqua Claudia) was an aqueduct that supplied the city of Rome, Italy, during antiquity.

History[edit | edit source]

Construction of the aqueduct began under the third Roman Emperor, Caligula, in 38 CE. Caligula was assassinated, however, in 41 CE, before he could see his project to fruition. The aqueduct would eventually be completed in 52 CE, during the reign of Emperor Claudius.[1]

Upon its completion, the aqueduct provided water for all 14 districts of Rome, before becoming unused throughout the years that followed, during the reign of Emperor Nero while he built his Golden Palace. After the palace's completion in 68 CE, the water returned.[2] In the years that followed, the aqueduct underwent various restorations, by Emperor Vespasian in 71 CE and Emperor Titus in 81 CE.[1]

Several sections along the aqueduct, all of which could be found in Rome's Antico District, were in disrepair by the 16th century, but they were renovated by architects under the commission of the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, during his liberation of Rome from Borgia rule.[1][3]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The Aqueduct of Claudius appears in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, which is set in Rome. Like all landmarks in the game, it is referred to by its Italian name in the database. However, it is called "Acquedotto Claudia", which is a grammatical error because acquedotto is a masculine noun, and the feminine name Claudia must be masculinized to agree with its grammatical gender. The proper form is "Acquedotto Claudio". The error may have stemmed from the Latin name of the aqueduct being Aqua Claudia.

In Assassin's Creed: Identity, to unlock the database entry for the aqueduct, Lo Sparviero can climb up the Borgia tower situated on the Palatine Hill and synchronize its viewpoint. Strangely, the aqueduct remains broken in this game, despite the events of Identity taking place after Brotherhood, when the aqueduct would have already been renovated by Ezio. One possible explanation for this discrepancy is that the aqueduct was damaged again during the War of the League of Cambrai.
