Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633 – 1707) was a Dutch painter.[1] Considered the founder of the English school of marine painting, he produced paintings such as The Burning of the 'Royal James' at the Battle of Solebay[2] and An English Ship in Action with Barbary Vessels. The latter painting was primarily done with imaginative and technical skills, as opposed to being an actual historic representation.[3] During the early 18th century, the pirate Edward Kenway recovered these paintings through his merchant fleet.
