A snare

A snare is a tool used for hunting wild animals, consisting of an anchored cable or wire noose that is set in a fixed location. While simple in design, it is effective at trapping small animals such as rabbits or squirrels; it can, however, be broken if a larger animal steps on it.

During the 18th century, the Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton regularly made use of snares while hunting in the Frontier. Although it was not their optimal use, Ratonhnhaké:ton could also use snares in combat, instantly dispatching an enemy by strangling them with the snare during a counter-attack.[1]

Description[edit | edit source]

The snares used by Ratonhnhaké:ton were primarily designed to catch small animals. They relied on a post in the ground and a running noose to catch prey. While they worked especially well with small animals such as hares, an experienced hunter like Ratonhnhaké:ton could even trap bobcats with them.[1]
