Bakchos (died 404 BCE) was a Spartan soldier under the command of Critias, the oligarchic Thirty Tyrants' leader in Athens.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 404 BCE, Critias ordered Bakchos to beat the Athenian man Polemarchus after learning of his suspected involvement in supplying the Athenian general Thrasybulus and his men with weapons in Boeotia. When an accompanying hoplite found Boeotian drachmae in Polemarchus' cart, Bakchos was ordered to immediately execute him, only for Critias' fellow statesman Theramenes to intervene by saying the man deserved a fair trial. Critias seemingly agreed, only to later signal to Bakchos for him to take Polemarchus and kill him elsewhere. Shortly after, Bakchos was present when Critias ordered the misthios Kassandra to kill Theramenes. Kassandra refused, however, and when Bakchos was sent instead, she killed him.[1]
