Trajan (Latin: Imperator Caesar Nerva Traianus Divi Nervae filius Augustus; 53 – 117), born Marcus Ulpius Traianus, was Roman Emperor from 98 to his death.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Under Trajan's rule, the Roman Empire reached its largest territorial size. He was also in charge of many construction projects in Rome, for which he often employed his favorite architect, Apollodorus of Damascus. One such projects was the Baths of Trajan, which was built atop a section of Nero's ruined Golden Palace, and was poetically intended for use by the commoners.[2] Other projects included a market which, when fully operational, housed no less than 150 shops and offices,[3] and a column which commemorated Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars.[4]

Despite the Nabataean Kingdom being a key Roman trading partner, when King Rabbel II Soter died in 106 CE without royal issue, Trajan refused to recognize any claimants to the throne and instead expanded his empire by annexing the monarchy, converting it into the Roman province of Arabia Petraea.[5] Roman presence in the region of Hegra was later expanded with military occupation from Cyrenaica's Legio III and establishing a fort for protecting travelers and collecting charges along the Incense Road.[6]
