A Single Madman was a virtual representation of one of Edward Kenway's genetic memories, relived by a research analyst in 2013 at Abstergo Entertainment through the Animus Omega.[1]

Description[edit | edit source]

Edward set out to kill Captain Julien du Casse, claim his vessel for Nassau's defense, and conquer the island's cove for himself.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Edward addressed his crew aboard the Jackdaw.

  • Edward: Gentlemen!

He walked through his crew and took a man's sword from its sheath. Jumping atop the deck railing, he waved the sword to be seen and the men gathered around him.

  • Edward: As is custom among our kind, we do not plunge headlong into folly on the orders of a single madman, but act according to our own collective madness! The object of our attention is a square-rigged galleon, and we want her for the advantage she'll bring Nassau. So I'll put it to the vote... All those in favor of storming this cove and taking this ship, stomp and shout "Aye!"
  • Crew: Aye!
  • Edward: Those who oppose... whimper "Nay."

Edward paused and heard no reply. Tossing the blade back to the man from whom he had taken it, he hopped down. On the way back to the helm, he passed Edward Thatch, who leaned on the railing to the quarterdeck, and James Kidd, who sat on the bottom step.

Edward left the Jackdaw and traveled through the jungle.

  • Soldier 1: ¿Le has dado a algo? ¿Ves algo? (Did you hit something? Can you see?)
  • Soldier 2: Si sientes curiosidad, ¿por qué no miras tú? (If you're so curious, why don't you have a look?)
Edward reached the small settlement on the other side of the island, but Julien was not present. Spotting the galleon still in harbor, he reasoned that Julien would be there if he was not on land. He swam to the ship and climbed its hull, eavesdropping on Julien giving orders to the crew.

  • Edward: Swing the Jackdaw 'round to the cove's entrance and make as big a show as you can.
  • Adéwalé: Aye, captain!
Edward jumped overboard and swam to shore, where he saw a collapsed wall blocking his path.
  • Edward: Damn this wall.
He climbed over and on it to enter the jungle. Near the top was a broken suspension bridge made of simple planks. While he attempted to cross, it broke and he fell, but caught himself on its final plank. He climbed back to the bridge's moorings.
  • Edward: That was too bloody close.
He scaled more rock walls and wood support structures to reach the top of the cliff that the structure had formerly overlooked. He followed a path into the jungle and passed an African man running the opposite way.
  • African civilian 1: They shot him! Right in the head!
Only slightly further away lay an African man's body.
  • Edward: Du Casse hasn't lost any of his charm.
He continued and passed a Spanish soldier inspecting the body of another fatally shot African man. Crossing a tree branch, he overheard gunfire.
  • Soldier 1: (What was that?)
  • Soldier 2: He's not there. Come on. When we find that rat, I'll gut him.)
  • Soldier 1: (No you won't. Du Casse wants him for questioning.)
Edward kept along the path and soon crossed over a group of soldiers interrogating another African man at a supply camp.
  • Soldier 3: Shall I bring you to the manor then? Mister du Casse is in a foul mood.
  • African civilian 2: No, please. I have told you all I know.
  • Soldier 3: If the runaway doesn't show, we'll be back
Edward eliminated the soldiers, looted the supply crates of what little they held, and read a note on box.

Duty Roster

Du Casse has requested more guards for his manor. My life is but to serve his every inconsequential whim, apparently. As such, the new roster is as follows:

First watch – Crodero and García
Second watch – Martín and Gutiérrez
Third watch – Sánchez and Díaz
Fourth watch – Delgado and Navarro

Edward continued onwards. Closer to the island's main settlement, he saw a larger Spanish encampment occupying a former Lucayan peoples' village. Two soldiers stood over the bodies of a dead white man and woman who had previously been tied to the stakes behind them.

  • Soldier 4: (He was reaching for a blade. I had no choice.)

Edward passed through and finally reached the settlement.

  • Soldier 5: (Du Casse's rare pistols have gone missing and they're saying it's my doing.)
  • Soldier 6: (Be very careful, the man has a cruel streak.)

Eliminating or killing the guards on patrol in the manor grounds, Edward entered its main hall and saw a pile of moving crates in the middle of the room. Atop the stack was a portrait of du Casse, which Edward stole and pocketed.

  • Edward: Du Casse is a bit of a dandy.

He read another note on the crate pile.

Perfumed Note

Paintings, I regret,
Sculptures, I despise.
For none can reflect,
The beauty of mine eyes.
Look in thy glass,
And tell whose visage you see.
Alas!
None are quite so handsome as thee.

He sarcastically gasped in astonishment.

  • Edward: Cuts as deep as any blade.

He killed a guard in another room.

  • African civilian 3: Mercy, please! I won't tell a soul.

Edward left to inspect the back yard and saw more soldiers interrogating prisoners.

  • Edward: Those prisoners may know something I don't.
  • Soldier 7: (Don't you dare look at me like that. We had an agreement. Your people broke it.)

Edward killed the guards and freed the prisoners, who promptly attacked their occupiers. After the skirmish, the manor's head servant spoke to him. *African civilian 3: Thank you. Du Casse is a hard master.

  • Edward: Not for much longer. Where can I find him?
  • African civilian 3: By the docks. We can take him together.
  • Edward: Aye, I'll catch you up.

He went to a cliff and climbed on an overhanging branch to survey the coast, where he saw du Casse's large ship anchored in the harbor. He performed a Leap of Faith into the water. Submerged, he saw a sunken treasure chest and looted the Captain's Wheellock Pistols from inside. He stayed underwater to avoid enemy fire and swam closer to du Casse's ship.

  • Julien: Lively, lads!

Edward saw the vessel's craftmanship matched du Casse's expensive life at the manor.

  • Edward: Du Casse may be a snob, but he's got taste.

  • Julien: Speed along, muchachos (men)! Double time!
¡Vamos, deprisa! (Hurry now)! We've four harbours to hit this week!
    Eh, oh! Look alive!
    We'll weigh anchor before dawn!
¡Comed hasta hartaros! (Eat your fill, men)! This is the last time you will see land for a month!
    Lively, lads! What's happening there?
See that the cargo is secure! Move your ass and do your job, (son of a bitch!)

Edward climbed the galleon's mast and assassinated Julien from above.

Edward tried to assassinate du Casse but missed. Du Casse mocked him.

  • Julien: Filthy thief. I'll drag you straight to the gallows.
The two men entered a duel, in which du Casse would typically avoid Edward's sword strikes and strike from afar with excellent effect using his pistols. Edward also had to use ranged combat, shooting at du Casse or blowing up gunpowder barrels on the ship deck when du Casse was near them, or breaking du Casse's guard and rapidly attacking in close range. After a long fight, Edward fatally stabbed du Casse.

  • Edward: You remember the gift you gave me? Well it answers just fine.
  • Julien: Fils du putain! (You son of a whore!) As bold as a musket ball, and still half as sharp.
  • Edward: I'm sorry about this, mate. But I can't risk you telling your Templar friends about me still kicking around.
  • Julien: I pity you, boucanier (buccaneer). After all you have seen, after all we showed you of our Order, still you embrace the life of an ignorant and aimless rogue.

Edward took a key from Julien's body.

  • Edward: What's this...?
  • Julien: Is petty larceny the extent of your ambition? Have you no mind to comprehend the scope of ours? All the empires on Earth, abolished! A free and opened world, without parasites like you! Que l'enfer que tu trouveras soit le fruit de ton insouciance. (May the hell you find be of your own making.)

The Jackdaw pulled into the cove.

  • Edward: The cove is ours!'

Outcome[edit | edit source]

Edward assassinated Julien du Casse, and claimed Great Inagua for himself.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

If players try to have Edward approach du Casse's manor during the memory, it will make him desynchronize. Additionally, neither of the two tunnels that lead to the manor's later treasure cavern will be accessible.
