Zeami Motokiyo (世阿弥 元清; c. 1363 – c. 1443) was a Japanese actor and playwright. Coming from a low-class theater family, at 12 years old, Zeyami became the companion[1] of 17-year-old[2] shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Through this connection, he was able to mingle with the higher classes and get accustomed with their culture and preferences. Zeyami used his writing skill and created many plays meant to be enjoyed by these cultured people, establishing the Noh theater. These "austere, ethereal, beautiful" pieces remain the most famous Noh plays to this day.[1]
