The '''Xiongnu''' were a confederation of tribal nomadic peoples who inhabited {{Wiki|Eurasian Steppe}} in [[Asia|Mainland Asia]] from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE.

From at least since the 3rd century BCE, the Xiongnu have led [[raid]]s into the [[China|Chinese]] mainland. In response, the [[Qing dynasty|Qing]] Emperor [[Qin Shi Huang]] ordered the construction of the [[Great Wall of China|Great Wall]] to defend against the raiders.
