According to legend, Vortigern recruited the [[mercenary]] brothers [[Hengist and Horsa]] to protect his people against invaders for a monthly sum. When peace was achieved, however, and more and more Germanic tribes came to live in Britannia, the brothers asked Vortigern to increase the payments. They asked for more and more until Vortigern refused.
