The Tōshōdai-ji was founded in 759<ref>{{WP|Tōshōdai-ji}}</ref> by the [[China|Chinese]] monk [[Jianzhen]], who sought to erect a temple to safeguard the [[śarīra]] he had smuggled out of the continent in order to keep it out of the hands of the [[Golden Turtles]].<ref name="Letter"/>
