In 1582, a duel between the [[Shinbakufu]] [[Akechi Kagemitsu]] and the former [[daimyo]] [[Shōtei]] was scheduled to take place on the bridge. In actuality, Kagemitsu had planned an ambush on the bridge to eliminate Shōtei and bring southern Omi fully under his control. His plan did not came to fruition when the former retainer of [[Oda Nobunaga]], [[Yasuke]] arrived and interrupted the fight before it could begin. Yasuke eliminated Kagemitsu's men as he retreated with his bodyguard [[Gamo Yoshimitsu]], with Shotei simiarly retreating to Koga as well.
