'''Sanada Masatoyo''' (died 1582) was a [[Japan|Japanese]] swordmaster who founded the [[Sanada-ryu]] school of combat in [[Azuchi Castle]] during the late 16th century. His school came to become a rival of the {{Wiki|Shinkage-ryū}} school led by [[Kamiizumi Nobutsuna]].<ref name="Nobutsuna Sensei">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Nobutsuna Sensei]]</ref>

During a duel waged against Nobutsuna's school, Masatoyo defeated three of his students and won Nobutsuna's own sword from him, which humiliated the elder swordsmaster in the eyes of Lord [[Oda Nobunaga]]. Eventually in Spring of 1581, during Masatoyo's pledge of fealty to Nobunaga, Nobutsuna's newly trained student [[Yasuke|Diogo]] challenged and killed Masatoyo's students in an actual sword duel, winning back his mentor's lost katana.<ref name="Nobutsuna Sensei" />
