During the Peloponnesian War Podarkes ruled the island of Mykonos with an iron fist, which led to the people calling him "Podarkes the Cruel".

In 431 BCE the rebels of Mykonos employed the help of the [[Sparta|Spartan]] mercenary [[Kassandra]] to end Podarkes' reign.
