The '''Palace of Whitehall''' at [[Westminster]] was the residence of the [[England|English]] monarchs from from 1530 until most of it burned down in 1698.

==History==
In 1530, King [[Henry VIII of England|Henry VIII]] moved the royal residence from the [[Palace of Westminster]] to Whitehall.<ref name= "Houses">''[[Assassin's Creed: Syndicate]]'' – [[Database: Houses of Parliament]]</ref> In 1542, Henry VIII, wished to redirect funeral processions of plague victims away from the palace and so, had the church of [[St Martin-in-the-Fields]] built.<ref name= "Martin">''Assassin's Creed: Syndicate'' – [[Database: St. Martin-in-the-Fields]]</ref> 

In 1622, King [[James VI and I|James I]] had a [[Banqueting Hall]] built from {{Wiki|Inigo Jones}}' designs. He used it to host cultural receptions and performances, a mark of the Stuart dynasty that often promoted the divine power of the [[monarchy]].<ref name= "Chapel">''Assassin's Creed: Syndicate'' – [[Database: Chapel Royal]]</ref> In 1649, during the [[English Civil War]], King [[Charles I of England|Charles I]] was tried for treason at Westminster Palace,<ref name= "Houses"/> and made his final procession from [[St James' Park|St. James Park]] to Whitehall Palace, where he was executed<ref name="Park">''Assassin's Creed: Syndicate'' – [[Database: St. James's Park]]</ref>

In 1698, the Palace burned down, with the Banqueting Hall being the only building to survive. It was later repurposed as the new Chapel Royal and stands to this day.<ref name= "Chapel"/> The street and surrounding area where the other buildings composing the Palace once stood then became known as [[Whitehall]].<ref>{{WP|Whitehall}}</ref>
