The '''Nguyễn clan''', also known as the '''Nguyễn lords''' ({{Wiki|Vietnamese language|Vietnamese}}: ''Chúa Nguyễn'', 主阮), was a feudal noble clan that ruled southern [[Vietnam]] (known as {{Wiki|Đại Việt}} at the time) during the {{Wiki|Revival Lê dynasty}} from the mid-16th to the late 18th century. It was a forerunner to the {{Wiki|Nguyễn dynasty}}, the last Vietnamese dynasty which unified and ruled the country during the 19th century.<ref>{{WP|Nguyễn lords}}</ref>

In 1725, a Nguyễn clan official met with the [[Qing dynasty|Qing]] businesswoman [[Lee Huiyin]] in Phú Xuân. Aware of the clan's ambitions to conquer the territory of the [[Khmer Empire|Khmer Kingdom]], Lee offered to lend her support to their cause, revealing that she was in possession of a powerful [[Crescent amulet|artifact]] that would allow the Nguyễn lords to rule all of {{Wiki|Indochina}}. The official was skeptical of Lee's claims, prompting the businesswoman to question if the Nguyễn clan's might was as great as she had been led to believe. Insulted, the official showed Lee the strength of the clan's military, boasting that it was far superior to that of the {{Wiki|Trịnh lords}} in the north. He then asked to see the artifact Lee had spoken of, but the businesswoman said that she could not simply parade it around. However, she assured the official that she had the means to uphold her promise, being in command of not just a sizable fleet, but also having the [[Chinese Brotherhood of Assassins|Chinese Assassins]] [[Xiao Han]], [[Liu Qing]], and [[Xue Yan]] as her allies. Just as the three Assassins revealed themselves, catching the official by surprise, Lee invited him to discuss the terms of their agreement.<ref name="EP 107"/>
