In 845, Máel captured [[Vikings|Viking]] warrior [[Thorgest]] and had him drowned in [[Lough Neagh]], having "taken to anger" after Thorgest "wished to better acquaint [him]self" with Máel's daughter.<ref name="Drengir"/>

After Máel died in 862, allegedly due to being murdered by his nephew [[Áed Findliath]], the High Kingship passed on to the Northern [[Uí Néill]], with Áed succeeding Máel.
