From 1592 to 1598, Joseon defended itself against an {{Wiki|Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598)|invasion}} from the [[Japan]]ese warlord [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]].<ref name="Seth 2020 ch2" /> [[Yun Pyeong-Gyu]], a Joseon scholar and engineer, had ancestors who fought in the war and were slaughtered. In 1725, during the reign of King {{Wiki|Yeongjo of Joseon|Yeongjo}}, a Joseon envoy was sent to the {{Wiki|Manchu people|Manchu}} [[Qing dynasty|Qing Empire]]. Following the events at [[Sun (Hualien Trading Company)|Sun]]'s {{Wiki|Gambling ship|floating gambling hall}} that resulted in the slaughter of [[Shimazu Saito]]'s followers, Edward recruited Saito into the Zhang Wei Union and brought her back to their headquarters. Upon recognising her as a Japanese [[samurai]], Yun deeply objected to Edward's decision, with [[Zhang (Macanese)|Zhang]] telling Edward and [[John Young]] of the wars fought between Joseon and the Japanese. While Saito was grateful for being recognised as Japanese unlike her [[Shimazu clan|clanmates]], Yun told her to shut her mouth and brought up how his ancestors were slaughtered during the Imjin Wars. Eventually, Yun and Saito dropped the animosity during an [[archer]]y contest and agreed to work together.<ref name="FT27" />
