'''Izumo no Okuni''' (c.1578 – c.1613) was a [[Japan]]ese entertainer and shrine maiden.

Around 1603, Izumo devised a way of advertising her wares by dancing on a stage, usually cross-dressing as a man with swords and doing comedy vignettes.
