The '''Government of National Defense''' was the first government of the [[Third French Republic]] that lasted from late 1870 to early 1871 due to the loss of the [[Franco-Prussian War]].

==History==
In the fall of 1870, the [[Government of National Defense]] was established after [[Napoleon III]]'s capture and fall as emperor. To contend with the [[Prussia]]ns, it used the [[Champ de Mars]] as a fighting training grounds for the civilians to combat their enemies. However, within a few months, the government abandoned the Parisians as the Prussians surrounded Paris. With the war raging against the people of Paris, the French Brotherhood finally intercepted a message for [[Parisian Rite of the Templar Order|French Templar]] [[Victoire L'Estocq]] from [[Austrian Rite of the Templar Order|Austrian Templar]] Countess [[Konstanze von Visler]], who detailed on they manipulated the government from [[Tours]] to withhold aid for the Parisians.<ref>''Assassin's Creed: The Engine of History – The Resurrection Plot'' – Chapter 16</ref> However, after a truce between the [[British Brotherhood of Assassins|British Assassin]] [[Simeon Price]] and the countess,<ref>''Assassin's Creed: The Engine of History – The Resurrection Plot'' – Chapter 19</ref> the Templar stopped their manipulation as the government signed an armistice with the new {{Wiki|German Empire}} for peace.
