Among Nobunaga's close vassals Niwa Nagahide was one of the most trustworthy. From a young age he participated in many battles alongside the Oda clan. In 1573, under Nobunaga's orders, he played a crucial role in the fall of the Asakura by eliminating the clan's heir, Akimimaru, as well as his mother. This allowed Nobunaga to seize the provinces of Ōmi and Echizen, thereby significantly strengthening his power. In 1576, he was tasked with overseeing the construction of Azuchi Castle. In recognition of his loyal services, he not only received the castle of Sawayama, a vast estate in the province of Wakasa, of which he would eventually become the governor, but he was also among those who, for their efforts in the construction of Azuchi, received precious items, including the famous painting 'The Market' by Yü-chien. These gifts reflected the esteem his lord had for him, as well as the honor bestowed upon him in 1581, when he led an equestrian parade in Kyoto, commanded by Oda, in the presence of the emperor.

In 1582, he abandoned the campaign against Shikoku, which had been entrusted to him by Nobunaga, to avenge the latter's death alongside Hideyoshi. Subsequently, he supported Hideyoshi until his own death in 1585, attributed to an unidentified illhess.
