In 200 BCE, after the collapse of the Seleucid Empire, a power vaccuum was left in the area. And the western regions of Cilicia soon turned into a [[Piracy|pirate]] stronghold. They became one of the most successful pirate empires in the Mediterranean area.<ref name="ACI">''[[Assassin's Creed: Initiates]]'' – [[Database: Pirates of the Mediterranean]]</ref>

By 100 BCE, they had grown so powerful that they were able to thwart any attempt to destroy them, including one such attempt from {{Wiki|Marcus Antonius Creticus}}. Their strength persevered for several more decades.<ref name="ACI" />
