'''Charles V''' (21 January 1338 – 16 September 1380), known as '''the Wise''', was King of [[France]] from 1364 to his death.

During his reign, France was involved in the [[Hundred Years' War]], and many construction projects were undertaken by him. One of these involved the conversion of the [[Louvre]] into a residence, and Charles moved there from the [[Conciergerie]].

Another project was the [[Bastille]], a fortress intended to protect the {{Wiki|Porte Saint-Antoine}} gate and the adjoining {{Wiki|Hôtel Saint-Pol}}. The Saint-Pol in turn had been constructed under Charles away from the busy area around the Louvre.
