The Cempoalans of Totonacapan were one of the first native peoples to side with the Spanish against the other {{Wiki|Mesoamerica}}n peoples, heavy taxations by the Aztecs after Cempoala was defeated by them in the mid-15th century led to much animosity and was among the reasons they turned so easily.<ref>{{WP|Cempoala}}</ref>

By August 1519, the Spanish had made their way to [[Tlaxcala]] with the Cempoalans drawing their cannons along for them. On 31 August, the morning of the first encounter.
