'''Benedict of Nursia''' (480 – 547) was an [[Italy|Italian]] monk, writer, and theologian who is venerated as a Saint in various [[Christianity|Christian]] denominations. He was the founder of the [[Benedictines|Order of Saint Benedict]], whose followers were known as Benedictines.

Around 530, Benedict wrote a series of precepts that later came to known as the {{Wiki|Rule of Saint Benedict}}, which established a set of principles which monks were encouraged to follow. One of the principles was the {{Wiki|Canonical hours}} which marks the divisions of the day where prayers should be performed.
