Possessives[edit source]

So our wiki's policy is only ' not 's after singular nouns that end in s. I know some manuals of style have moved away from this but for the most part (Odyssey not withstanding) Ubisoft adheres to the former so far now so do we. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 08:51, October 26, 2019 (UTC)

This is actually not what our manual of style states. Our wiki policy is that the extra ⟨s⟩ is dropped in singular nouns ending with ⟨s⟩ only in certain conditions. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 11:15, October 26, 2019 (UTC)
To be exact, the ⟨s⟩ should be added when it is phonemic for the possessive form of the noun. What this means is that if in reading a noun out loud without the extra ⟨s⟩ were to render it impossible for a listener to know that a possessive is being used, then there should be an extra ⟨s⟩. An example of this is the word boss. The possessive of boss, boss's is pronounced with two syllables , i.e. /bɔs.ɪz/. Without the latter syllable, i.e. the extra ⟨s⟩, a listener would not understand that boss has been inflected to the possessive form. In other cases, however, it is conventional for pronunciation of the possessive to be dropped, such as in the case of names ending with the sibilant /z/ as in Socrates, Achilles, etc. The extra ⟨s⟩ depends on whether or not it is phonemic, meaning necessarily pronounced for the word to be understood as a possessive. I realize that the manual of style is probably not clear enough about this and should be updated. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 11:27, October 26, 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, I keep having more to add. I didn't revert the other's corrections of the possessive because they happened to mostly be cases where the condition for dropping the extra ⟨s⟩ does apply. The only one that I am iffy on is Cornwallis. This is one of those cases where there's some ambiguity. The possessive of the name Cornwallis can be pronounced with the /s/ lengthened rather than as an additional syllable. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 11:37, October 26, 2019 (UTC)

Hello Sol Pacificus,
Thank you so much for clarifying the use of possessive nouns. I also thanked Lacrossedeamon for the help on their talk page. Still being a new contributor, I'm sorry for the mistakes I made and will read the manual of style more carefully. TheAstuteMaverick 23:53, October 26, 2019 (UTC)
